Dr. Abd El Wahed, is the head of the animal hygiene lab at the University of Leipzig, Germany.
He received his PhD in biology from Goettingen University, Germany in 2011.
He is a member of the German Alliance for Global Health Research, the German Society for Tropical medicine, travel medicine and Global Health, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), and is one of the founders of the network for young researchers in medical infectious diseases (Netzwerk Junge Infektionsmedizin) and the Africa Society of Paratuberculosis.
In 2013, he was awarded the young investigator award from the ASTMH on the establishment of a mobile laboratory for the rapid detection of hemorrhagic fever viruses in low-resource settings. He established a mobile suitcase laboratory for rapid detection of emerging and neglected pathogens. The mobile setup was deployed in several African and Asian countries.
