David Duran

Lieutenant, City of Stuart Police Department (FL)
What motivated you to be a LEPSL ambassador?

My motivation to be a LEPSL ambassador is to encourage fellow officers to continue their education. Investing in yourself will pay off, and the LEPSL program is a phenomenal program that is relevant and helpful to all officers, inspiring them to be executives in the law enforcement profession.

Why did you choose the LEPSL program? What made LEPSL stand out in comparison to other schools/programs?

I chose the LEPSL program because it was the only program that focused on my goal of being a law enforcement executive and agency head. Other programs focused on criminal justice theories, and this program integrated that with leadership development skills.

What were your concerns about starting a graduate program?

When starting this program, I was concerned about the life/ school/ work balance. Though it is time-intensive, the topics are interesting, so it is easier to handle.

How did the LEPSL program help you achieve your career goals?

The LEPSL program will help me achieve my goal of becoming a chief or director in the future. Currently, the classes I have taken have helped me get a better understanding of how to implement changes within the agency and communicate better with my subordinates.

What advice would you share with prospective LEPSL applicants?

I advise anyone considering applying for the LEPSL program to DO IT. You will not regret it. The topics and classes are relevant to policing today. You will get clarity and direction on issues that everyone across the country deals with. This program can open doors you didn’t think possible, and you will gain the confidence to walk through them.

What was your favorite part of the LEPSL program?

My favorite part of this program is the current topics and the knowledgeable professors.

What were you balancing while participating in the LEPSL program?

I am a father of four kids: two are college students and two are under 8. I am also in charge of the midnight shifts and the K-9 unit at the police department. Kids, plus work, plus school and time with your spouse equals minimum time to yourself. This is an investment in you that will pay off the minute you take your first class. Frustration makes graduation so much sweeter. It is possible, believe in yourself.

How did you stay motivated throughout the program in the face of competing priorities in your life?

My motivation through this program was my support system. My wife and boss constantly reminded me that the end was closer with each course.
