My service in law enforcement spanned 25 years, working in patrol, detectives, union president, Sergeant, Lieutenant of Special Operations, Captain, and Deputy Chief. I attended the FBINA in 2019. I retired at the end of 2022 and have successfully transitioned into healthcare, now serving as the Director of Operations in an outpatient setting.
What motivated you to be a LEPSL Ambassador?
The LEPSL program was an exceptional example of how working professionals can improve themselves to serve those around them better. The experience broadened my view and better equipped me for life. Since retiring, I have been able to take many of my experiences and this education into the next phase of my life. I am happy to have an opportunity to endorse the program and also encourage others to strive for more.
Why did you choose the LEPSL program? What made LEPSL stand out in comparison to other schools/programs?
The compressed, yet continuous cycle of the courses. The structure took something huge and broke it down into achievable chunks.
What were your concerns about starting a graduate program?
Getting back into the swing of studying and coursework.
How did the LEPSL program help you achieve your career goals?
The coursework better equipped me to speak intelligently about the issues facing law enforcement. From there, I was able to rise to the rank of Deputy Chief, knowing that I had a more well-rounded perspective to draw from. The program continues to serve me in my work today.
What advice would you share with prospective LEPSL applicants?
I would encourage everyone to meaningfully seek continuous growth and improvement. Something might seem hard, so stalling seems logical. But, had you started, every day that passes is one day closer you would be to achieving your goal.
What was your favorite part of the LEPSL program?
My favorite part of the program was the interaction with other professionals from across the country. Being in Alaska, we tend to be isolated. I appreciated the ability to learn from other experts in the field and on occasion validate things we do at our department.
What were you balancing while participating in the LEPSL program?
During the LEPSL program, I was married, a father of three teens, and serving as a Lieutenant and Captain with the department.
How did you stay motivated throughout the program in the face of competing priorities in your life?
I focused on the day-to-day challenges, which led me to accomplishing the work of the week, leading to the completion of each seven-week course, resulting in my completion of the program! Knowing that the end had a finite time was helpful for me and my family.
