Michael Penney-Guzman

Deputy Sheriff, Orange County Sheriff's Department (CA)

In July 2021, I graduated from the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy. I was assigned to the Intake Release Center (IRC), which is responsible for booking and processing all arrestees in the County of Orange. I served various roles inside custody before working as an Administrative Training Deputy Sheriff for the IRC.

What motivated you to be a LEPSL ambassador?

My motivation is to see people succeed in their careers and help them progress to a higher education level.

Why did you choose the LEPSL program? What made LEPSL stand out in comparison to other schools/programs?

I had co-workers who attended the LEPSL program and provided great feedback. It was great to communicate with other leaders around the country on different topics on a weekly basis. Overall, I was impressed with how organized the program was operated.

What were your concerns about starting a graduate program?

I had a newborn and my wife struggled at home with our baby, so I did not think I had enough time to start and finish a graduate program. I started the program and managed my workload. At the same time, LEPSL staff understand that we have busy lives. My advice is to always communicate with the professors ahead of time.

How did the LEPSL program help you achieve your career goals?

The LEPSL program has helped me with more opportunities within my department.

What advice would you share with prospective LEPSL applicants?

Just be yourself and do not be afraid to take on a new challenge. This is a great program. Don’t look at the entire program length; look at it from one term at a time.

What was your favorite part of the LEPSL program?

Interacting with everyone in the discussion boards. I’m new to the law enforcement career, so learning from people’s experiences was great.

What were you balancing while participating in the LEPSL program?

Family and work. My wife wasn’t working because we had our newborn, so trying to spend time with the family was difficult at first. I adapted and made things work as I continued in the program.

How did you stay motivated throughout the program in the face of competing priorities in your life?

Just completing one term at a time. I knew I was getting closer and that motivated me.
