Headshot of Randolph Peshon

Randolph Peshon

Undersheriff (Ret.), El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (CA)

I retired after 42 years in law enforcement with a wide variety of assignments and experiences, including detectives, search and rescue, courts, and patrol. I served as a jail commander and a custody division commander. Starting as a patrol lieutenant through undersheriff, I had the added assignment of creating a new headquarters complex, including land, funding, design, and construction. By creating teams, I was able to complete the project early and $7 million under a $62 million budget. I thoroughly enjoyed my career.

What motivated you to be a LEPSL ambassador?

I enjoyed the program and continue to use what I learned even in retirement. I desire to continue to support LEPSL in any way I can.

Why did you choose the LEPSL program? What made LEPSL stand out in comparison to other schools/programs?

LEPSL and the University of San Diego are well-known as a quality program and institutions of learning.

What were your concerns about starting a graduate program?

I was concerned about starting late in my career but was pleased to find I could immediately use what I learned while completing the program.

How did the LEPSL program help you achieve your career goals?

LEPSL continues to provide me with the skills to problem solve and think about issues creatively.

What advice would you share with prospective LEPSL applicants?

LEPSL provides the management and leadership tools to successfully navigate an agency’s upper echelons. Much of being an effective leader is about asking the right questions and having the confidence to be responsible for an assignment you know nothing about. LEPSL not only provides the technical knowledge but also the art of leadership.

What was your favorite part of the LEPSL program?

My favorite parts of the program were the interactions with my cohort and the freedom to perform extra research in the assignments. The instructors encouraged my sometimes out-of-the-box ideas!

What were you balancing while participating in the LEPSL program?

I balanced the responsibility of leading my agency as the Undersheriff and building a new headquarters. Sadly, while attending LEPSL, my agency suffered the violent loss of a deputy. The support from my cohort, professors and staff was tremendous.

How did you stay motivated throughout the program in the face of competing priorities in your life?

The challenge and quality of LEPSL were big motivations. My wife and both of my daughters were strongly supportive. My older daughter graduated with a PhD from USD so the enjoyment of learning runs in the family!
