Chief Gonzalez’s commitment to law enforcement is underscored by his diverse experience and unwavering dedication. Recently, he has been appointed as the 23rd Chief of Police for the La Verne Police Department, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career. Chief Gonzalez’s career has seen him take on a myriad of roles, showcasing his versatility and expertise. From Field Training Officer and Police Corporal to Detective, Range Master, and Police Sniper, further honing his leadership skills and proficiency. His journey also includes roles as Tactical Flight Officer, Drug Recognition Expert, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, and Detective Lieutenant. He served as the Administrative Lieutenant, overseeing the Support Services Division, and Captain, overseeing the Operations Division before ascending to his current role.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Chief Gonzalez has been an integral part of the La Verne community for many years. Actively participating in the Youth and Family Action Committee, he has demonstrated a commitment to community engagement and building positive relationships. He is also a member of the Active Transportation Committee, advocating for pedestrians and cyclists and providing a law enforcement perspective reviewing road conditions for safe travel by all. Chief Gonzalez is a staunch advocate for continuous education in formal and informal settings. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Management and a Master of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego, further enhancing his expertise in the field. With a proven track record of leadership, community involvement, and a dedication to ongoing education, his career path continues to make a lasting impact on the La Verne community and beyond. As the 23rd Chief of Police, Chief Gonzalez is poised to lead the department with integrity, vision, and a commitment to serving and protecting the community.
What motivated you to be a LEPSL ambassador?
I believe in the program and see what it has done for my career. I can provide real examples to help those who are on the fence.
Why did you choose the LEPSL program? What made LEPSL stand out in comparison to other schools/programs?
Although there are many universities that offer similar programs, I found that LEPSL was a perfect fit for my schedule and it met my initial expectations. Testimonials from other friends and colleagues who graduated from USD surrounding the caliber of professors who are up to date in providing relevant leadership teachings and examples of everyday challenges.
What were your concerns about starting a graduate program?
Having the time to commit to a graduate program. The program’s outline is flexible for those with varying schedules.
How did the LEPSL program help you achieve your career goals?
The coursework which includes all written assignments not only improved my writing, but the relevancy of the coursework and its applicability to law enforcement and leadership aided in achieving those goals.
What advice would you share with prospective LEPSL applicants?
Pull the trigger! You will gain double your efforts that will impact your career positively.
What was your favorite part of the LEPSL program?
The daily bulletins and discussions with cohorts.
What were you balancing while participating in the LEPSL program?
A pandemic and managing the Support Services Division.
