I am currently the Assistant Police Chief responsible for managing the day-to-day operations at the Richmond Police Department. Before being appointed Assistant Police Chief, I was a Captain accountable for commanding our Investigations Bureau and Operations Bureau. As a Lieutenant, I served as an Acting Captain and manager in our Administration Bureau, overseeing the department’s recruiting, hiring, and training efforts, and as a Patrol Watch Commander. As a Sergeant, I worked multiple assignments, first supervising a patrol team, then supervising our Personnel, Training & Recruiting Unit, and Regulatory Unit. I worked as a patrol officer, crime scene investigator, recruiting officer, and a DEA task force team member. I look forward one day to serving our community as the Chief of Police. I have a Master’s Degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego and a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in management and leadership from Herzing University.
What motivated you to be a LEPSL ambassador?
Now is the time for law enforcement professionals to work to expand their skills and realize their leadership potential. What better way to help my profession than to share my LEPSL experience with my colleagues and industry leaders
Why did you choose the LEPSL program? What made LEPSL stand out in comparison to other schools/programs?
The University of San Diego has a reputation that is second to none in the country, and everything they produce is done with excellence; there was no doubt in my mind that the LEPSL program would be no different. In addition, the many partnerships and agreements between Command College, SMIP, and the National Academy make the LEPSL program an attractive option.
What were your concerns about starting a graduate program?
Making sure I had the time to complete the program and do it excellently.
How did the LEPSL program help you achieve your career goals?
I set a goal to obtain a graduate degree, and I accomplished that goal. This also makes me a competitive candidate for executive jobs that open up in other cities or jurisdictions.
What advice would you give to someone to be a more effective leader?
Effective leadership hinges on the ability to inspire and empower others. Focus on fostering a clear vision and communicating it with passion and transparency. Cultivate a culture of trust and respect with your team by actively listening to and valuing their input. Most importantly, lead by example. Do not be a walking oxymoron.
What was the most unexpected part of the LEPSL program?
The most unexpected part of the program was the capstone project. The LEPSL program took a renewed approach to traditional projects and put into place something that has a career benefit long after the student’s academic journey ends.
What were you balancing while participating in the LEPSL program?
Being a husband and father, I work full-time.
How did you stay motivated throughout the program in the face of competing priorities in your life?
I keep my eyes on my goals. And the instructors are very motivating as well.
