What motivated you to be a LEPSL ambassador?

As an Ambassador for the University of San Diego’s Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership Master’s program, I am motivated by a desire to help others achieve their leadership goals in law enforcement. I want to offer insight and perspective based on my experience as an alumni to guide prospective students as they consider this impactful program. As a modern-day law enforcement leader, I believe in the importance of self-reflection, continuous growth, and a commitment to service. My goal is to support future leaders in advancing their careers and fostering positive change within their communities.

Why did you choose the LEPSL program? What made LEPSL stand out in comparison to other schools/programs?

I chose the University of San Diego’s Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership (LEPSL) master’s program because it offered a unique blend of practical leadership training and academic rigor tailored specifically for law enforcement professionals. The program’s focus on real-world challenges, strategic problem-solving, and forward-thinking leadership development resonated with my goals of becoming a more effective and innovative leader. The flexibility of the program also allowed me to balance my professional responsibilities while engaging in coursework that immediately applied to my role in law enforcement. The network of experienced professionals and the program’s emphasis on reflective, service-driven leadership further reinforced my decision.

What were your concerns about starting a graduate program?

When I first considered starting a graduate program, I had several concerns. The time commitment was a significant factor, especially with a demanding career in law enforcement during the civil unrest of 2020, and the need to balance family responsibilities. Having been out of school for over a decade, I was also apprehensive about returning to an academic environment and keeping up with the coursework while managing work-related duties. I wondered how I would find time for everything, including professional obligations, family commitments, and self-care, but I knew that investing in my leadership growth was essential for my career and personal development and my ability to lead into the future of our profession effectively.

How did the LEPSL program help you achieve your career goals?

The University of San Diego’s LEPSL program played a pivotal role in helping me achieve my leadership goals by providing me with the tools and knowledge needed to address the complexities of modern-day law enforcement. The program’s focus on strategic thinking, leadership development, and real-world application allowed me to immediately apply what I learned to my role. It deepened my understanding of organizational dynamics, crisis management, and effective communication, all of which have strengthened my ability to lead teams and make informed decisions. The program also encouraged self-reflection and growth, helping me become a more adaptive, forward-thinking leader, better equipped to serve both my team and the community.

What advice would you share with prospective LEPSL applicants?

For anyone considering the University of San Diego’s LEPSL program to become a more effective leader, my advice is to fully embrace the opportunity for growth. Approach the program with an open mind and a willingness to reflect on your own leadership style, as it encourages both professional and personal development. Be prepared to balance your time and make sacrifices, but know that the skills and insights you gain will immediately benefit your career. Engage actively with your peers, as the network of professionals in the program is invaluable. Most importantly, apply what you learn to your daily leadership challenges—this program is designed to give you practical tools that will make a real difference in how you lead and influence positive change. Lastly, be ready to inspire others within your organization to consider this program, as its impact is profound, particularly for agencies that can benefit from the collective expertise and collaboration of multiple alumni working together.

What surprised you about being in the LEPSL program?

The most unexpected part of the program was the immediate applicability of the coursework to my daily responsibilities in law enforcement. I was surprised at how quickly the lessons in leadership, strategy, and organizational management translated into real-world solutions for the challenges I faced on the job. Additionally, the depth of connection and support from both faculty and fellow students created a powerful learning community that I hadn’t anticipated but greatly appreciated. The collaborative environment truly enhanced the learning experience in ways I didn’t foresee. It has also opened numerous doors for future opportunities within the alumni network.

What were you balancing while participating in the LEPSL program?

As a newly promoted Lieutenant, I found myself navigating my new role while completing the Sherman Block Leadership Institute (SLI) program, having been promoted mid-way through. At the same time, I was leading my organization through the unprecedented challenges posed by COVID-19 and the civil unrest following the George Floyd protests, often serving as the solo Watch Commander in Operations. It was an immense test of my bandwidth, but the experience has left me unshaken in the face of team dynamics, workload, or project management. There is little that intimidates me now when it comes to leadership under pressure.

How did you stay motivated throughout the program in the face of competing priorities in your life?

I stayed motivated throughout the program by maintaining a strong support system, which was key to my success. Having a fellow peer and alumni to talk with provided invaluable encouragement and perspective, as they understood the unique challenges of balancing work, family, and academic demands. Additionally, guidance from outside mentors played a crucial role in keeping me focused, offering advice, and reminding me of the bigger picture—how this program was an investment not only in my career but also in my leadership potential. Their support, combined with the relevance of the coursework to my daily role, kept me driven to push through even the most demanding times. And last, but certainly not least, was the incredible support from my wife and my kids who often sacrificed as much or more than I did. It was a family achievement!
