In a pervasive post-truth media culture, false narratives about higher education quickly gain traction and shape public perceptions. These narratives simultaneously fuel and are fed by burgeoning efforts to bring higher education under the control of partisan politics. How can we break through to defend academic freedom, demonstrate the value of a liberal education, or recover the understanding of higher education as a public good? The rapid progress of artificial intelligence and other new technologies drives profound economic and social transformation. How can these new technologies be harnessed to advance the academic enterprise, and how can we prepare our students for a world being transformed by them?
Join colleagues and thought leaders from across the global higher education landscape to shape and share solutions to these and other challenges facing colleges and universities. The 2024 Annual Meeting will feature inspiring and insightful plenaries, opportunities to network with peers across institutional types, and a full community-generated program showcasing successful models of institutional transformation and best practices for promoting equity, innovation, and excellence in liberal education.

Improving Student Attention, Mindsets, and Motivation in a Distressed, Distracted World
As a result of the pandemic, stress, and digital distractions, students are less engaged, focused, and motivated than prior to COVID. A 2021 EdWeek Research Center survey found that student motivation and morale are significantly lower than they were prior to the pandemic with 87% of teachers reporting less student motivation. A 2023 Gradient Learning Poll found 80% of teachers concerned about their students’ engagement in the classroom. Research by Gloria Mark at the University of California, Irvine, has found that our focused attention spans have dropped from an average of 2.5 minutes 20 years ago to only 47 seconds by 2021.
This interdisciplinary conference will bring neuroscientists, psychologists, researchers, and educators together to explore the science of attention, focus, and motivation and the impacts of stress, exercise, mindfulness, and technology on student engagement. Discover ways to increase student motivation and focus, reduce digital distractions, and boost learning.
This conference will be presented as a hybrid conference. You can either attend in person or participate virtually. Click here for more details.

For those of us who have dedicated our professional careers to supporting the success of all students and to valuing their identities as core to how we design our educational spaces, these are challenging times. We are trying to figure out how to be advocates in circumstances that seek to dismantle the very work that we hold as foundational for student access and success in higher education.
At AAC&U, we are, and will always be, committed to a vision of educational excellence that is grounded in equity and inclusion, that provides the learning all students need for success in an uncertain future, and that prepares our students to address the compelling issues we face as a democracy and as a global community. This vision will be at the heart of the 2024 Conference on Diversity, Equity, and Student Success.
We must acknowledge and be informed about the current realities that are challenging the creation and sustainability of educational environments that seek to achieve a sense of belonging for all students. Yet, we must remain focused on what we know is foundational for student success—from inclusive and expansive teaching and learning practices to evidence-based recruitment, retention, progression, and graduation practices; from student engagement to effective academic and social program supports; from data collection and analysis to address inequities in student and educator outcomes to faculty and staff diversity and professional development.
AAC&U’s 2024 Conference on Diversity, Equity, and Student Success will focus on these topics and more. The conversations at the conference will be open to educators, students, administrators, policymakers, and community members. We invite open dialogues that are civil and respectful and that promote the free exchange of ideas and practices that support diversity, equity, and student success. What Unites Us is our shared responsibility and commitment to develop systems, structures, and policies that are centered in equality and justice for all.

Teaching Students to Think, Create, Innovate, Learn, and Adapt for an Age of Adversity and AI
In the wake of the pandemic, adversity, and the rise in automation, students are anxious about their future. A 2023 Junior Achievement Survey found 66 percent of teens are anxious about finding a job in the future due to artificial intelligence. A 2023 Future of Jobs Report by the World Economic Forum found that companies expect that 42% of their business tasks will be automated and expect to eliminate 83 million positions due to automation by 2027. The Jobs Report also found that analytical and creative thinking will be the most important skills needed by workers in 2023, along with resilience, flexibility and agility, curiosity, and lifelong learning. Brain and psychological research has discovered these skills can be taught and that being resilient is important for both creativity and curiosity. Cognitive Scientist Scott Barry Kaufman has found that adversity and trauma can lead to creative growth and that persistence and curiosity can predict creative achievement.
This interdisciplinary conference will bring neuroscientists, psychologists, researchers, and educators together to explore the science of our unique brains; what makes us different from machines; and how to develop our human skills, creativity, talents, and potential to compete in an automation age. Discover ways to promote different kinds of thinking and smarts; creativity and innovation; curiosity; resilience; agility and adaptability; and life-long learning. Discover ways to create a more human-focused education; appreciate the strengths of the gifted, less advantaged, and neurodiverse; and develop the skills and potential in all students for school, life, and future job success.
This conference will be presented as a hybrid conference. You can either attend in person or participate virtually. Click here for more details.
