Benjamin Kelso, MLS, MPS

Capt. Benjamin Kelso has over 30 years of experience in law enforcement and has previously served on the Executive Board of the San Diego Branch of the NAACP and the National Black Police Association as the Chapter President of the San Diego Black Police Officers Association. As the NBPA local San Diego chapter president, Captain Kelso is the organization’s liaison to the Chief of Police, and he is directly responsible for the overall oversight and success of the organization, including recruitment and retention, community relations, and budget.

Capt. Kelso holds graduate degrees in Liberal Studies with Organizational Leadership concentration and Professional Studies with Criminal Justice concentration from Fort Hays State University. He completed his undergraduate degree, graduating summa cum laude, and he holds several Associates degrees from Miramar College, where he graduated with honors with degrees in Social and Behavioral Science, Administration of Justice, Contemporary Police Technology, and Law Enforcement Supervision, and is an alumnus of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Capt. Kelso excels in patrol operations, investigations, community policing and community engagement, mentoring, developing high performing work teams. He has expertise in specialized investigations, specialized patrol assignments, Emergency Management with the SDPD-Office of Homeland Security, and Internal Affairs. Additionally, he is a proud member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated where he currently serves as the Western Region Director of Risk Management.
