Rita Armstrong is an Anthropologist who completed her fieldwork in Central Borneo. Her thesis looked at how ideas about self and status are shaped by work and livelihood in swidden societies. Since then, she has taught across a variety of disciplines, including Anthropology, Geography, Asian studies, and Engineering, with a focus on social and environmental justice across all these areas. She most recently taught “Culture, Community and Sustainability in Asia” with a focus on how agrarian transformations shaped by state policies and consumption patterns have impacted local livelihoods and cultures. She is an Ally of the Agroecology & Food Sovereignty Alliance in Australia and a member of the Association for the Study of Food and Society.
