In addition to serving as an adjunct faculty member at USD, Rufus Gant is also a Senior Technology Consultant at G2 Software Systems. He coordinates the analysis and management of DoD’s inventory of wireless communications product applications, ensuring appropriate cybersecurity, interoperability and resilience. Rufus has devoted the previous 18 years to managing all aspects of complex IT enterprise efforts, specifically including Information Assurance/Cybersecurity and Software and System Development Lifecycle execution. He’s been responsible for the acquisition, integration, deployment and sustainment of hardware, software and information systems. Efforts have included guiding and mentoring teams in fast-paced environments, maximizing productivity and quality while leveraging risk management best practices to ensure project execution and cybersecurity compliance. Rufus is also currently an adjunct faculty member with the University of Maryland’s Global Campus (UMGC).
Prior to joining G2 in May 2017, Rufus worked at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) as the Executive Director for IT Security and Compliance, responsible for 1) Maintaining an effective cybersecurity awareness program educating the enterprise on emerging cyber threats and effective breach prevention practices 2) Providing subject matter expertise on those regulatory drivers governing information and privacy protection for data residing within the University’s IT environment and 3) Leading a team of security risk and compliance professionals dedicated to continuously improving CPP’s information security program.
Rufus joined our USD staff in January 2020 and is teaching our CYBR 501 and 502 courses. He accumulated a combined 22 years of military service, 14 years on active duty and 8 years as a member of the United States Air Force Reserves. He retired from the Reserves in 2010 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Rufus obtained his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and has both a Master of Science degree in Information Technology from the University of Maryland, University College and a Master of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
