This MS in Health Care Informatics class prepares students, based upon prior knowledge achieved in the health care informatics program, to apply various types of clinical data to solve complex clinical questions. Students apply an evidence-based practice approach to solve, various clinical questions, using a variety of clinical datasets including population level data. Focus will be on how data is utilized to solve clinical questions, to develop clinical decision support rules, and Precision Medicine applications. Students will develop data analytics skills by utilizing real-world use cases found in the clinical setting and population focused domains.
Additional topics explored in this course include data visualization and emerging trends in data science.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Develop a data analytic plan based on the clinical use case being investigated.
2. Demonstrate the ability to apply structured and unstructured data from multiple sources to solve clinical problems.
3. Analyze various techniques to extract, transform, and load data using various software tools.
4. Identify appropriate data sets for use in precision medicine analysis.
5. Analyze the role of clinical data as applied to the field of Genomics.
6. Develop a clinical decision support rule utilizing an evidence based model.
7. Analyze a complex data set utilizing a data visualization tool.
8. Develop reports designed to communicate trends and recommended next steps.
9. Analyze data on disease and health outcomes in specific populations of interest (e.g., general population, health system members, patient).
