Jeff has over 35 years of executive management, marketing and engineering experience primarily in Software and Semiconductors. He has been involved in 14 startup ventures and served on 5 boards. Jeff is currently a Professor of Practice and the Program Director for the M.S. in Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship. He most recently spent time as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence, at USD’s School of Business, and a Professor of Practice for the School of Business.

Jeff has been a CEO, VP of Marketing, General Manager, VP of Business Development and started his career as a Design Engineer. He has worked for Texas Instruments, Rockwell International and co-founded startups including Brooktree Corp. and Syntricity. His participation in industry-wide innovations include being among the world’s first 2000 IC Design Engineers designing microprocessors and bringing early “Fabless” semiconductor and “SaaS” companies to market.

Jeff’s experience includes raising Angel and Venture Capital, Angel investing, Initial Public Offering, over 7 Mergers & Acquisitions, Consulting, Recruiting over 100 professionals and precedent setting IP litigation. He earned a BSEE from Stony Brook University and Executive MBA from UC San Diego.

Dr. Michael Lawless

Dr. Mike Lawless leads Entrepreneurship initiatives at the School of Business at USD. He founded, and then tripled participation and funding for the V2 Pitch Competition and the USD Legacy Entrepreneurship Conference. Mike launched a mentoring program for student entrepreneurs, and a process to help Mexican entrepreneurs to develop their new ventures. He was recognized with the 2016 USD award for “Innovation in Experiential Education.”

His article on “stretch goals” won the Academy of Management Review Best Article of 2011. Mike researches and teaches Strategy, Managing Technology and Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. He moved from the University of Maryland in 2011, where he won the Krowe Award, the highest recognition for MBA teaching, and a Top 15% teaching award. He was previously a visiting professor at INSEAD, where he designed and taught “Private Equity” and “Building Business in India” on the Singapore campus. Just prior, he was at Duke University and the University of Colorado. He has taught Strategic Management, Managing Technological Innovation to Executive, MBA and Executive MBA, and PhD students. He has been a visiting professor at UCLA, Dartmouth, and Warwick University, UK. Mike has lectured at Oxford, IESE, and the University of Peking, among others. He has held national elected office in the Academy of Management. His MBA and PhD are from UCLA.

Through his companies, Michael Lawless, Inc. and Venture Doctor, Mike has advised large and small firms and Federal agencies. He has consulted with start-ups in various stages, and launched two consulting firms and a food company. He has helped clients with competitive analysis, business launches, new product development, innovation management, change management, and entrepreneurship. His clients have included IBM, Qwest, and Phillips Petroleum and Phillips Electronics. Mike has been a principal or advisor on startups in IT, consumer goods, and consulting.

Mike’s research is on the evolution of organizations, effects of technological change on markets, innovation, and entrepreneurship. His work has been supported by a National Science Foundation grant. He has published many articles in top refereed journals—to include AMJ, AMR, SMJ, and OS. He has written a book, and edited two series of research volumes on managing technology. He served on the editorial board of AMJ and was Senior Editor at OS.

A retired Navy officer, Mike has extensive operational and management experience. He has a diverse background in intelligence collection and analysis, tactical air intelligence, design of training programs, inter-agency and inter-service coordination, and business processes. Recognition includes the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), Rifle and Pistol Expert, squadron Battle “E” and others.

Mike has supported school, church, and youth organizations. He has been a longboard surfer and an advanced SCUBA diver for over 20 years. Mike has also competed in many triathlons including the IronMan.

Dr. Ibrahim Sezan

Dr. Ibrahim Sezan is the principal and founder of Distinct Insights LLC, a strategic IP consultancy firm. He also serves on the Technical Advisory Board of AONdevIces. He held Senior Director positions at the Qualcomm Technology Licensing Business Group and the Qualcomm Strategic IP Group between 2013 and 2018. At Qualcomm Technology Licensing, his technology and IP focus have been differentiated use cases of 5G, mobile sensor and imaging technologies, multimedia, biometric authentication, mobile device-to-edge distributed intelligence, and mobile healthcare. At Strategic IP, as the Sensors Portfolio Team Leader, he was responsible for building the IP portfolio for Qualcomm Life’s 2net Design Technology Transfer/Licensing program. The program was aimed at enabling collection, communication and processing of patient/user generated data via body-conforming sensing devices and connected personal drug-delivery devices. Ibrahim joined Qualcomm MEMS Technologies (QMT) as a Senior Director of Technology in 2011 to advance and prototype the next generation Mirasol display technologies and led the algorithms and systems development teams.

Before joining QMT, Ibrahim was the CTO of Sharp Labs of America responsible for R&D in Americas. He was a member of the founding team of Sharp Labs. In addition to enabling Sharp’s milestone LCD display products with novel algorithm, system, and device technologies, Sharp Labs of America developed technologies in diverse areas including embedded machine vision, energy management, high-efficiency video coding, and biosensors.

Ibrahim developed and taught courses in academia and advised graduate students as an adjunct faculty. Throughout his career, he has led or contributed to various academic innovation and academy-industry partnership programs. Between 2013 – 2018, he served as an advisor in the area of Digital Health for the UCSF Clinical and Scientific Translational Institute’s Catalyst Accelerator program. He is currently a member of the SmartSheet Venture Team, University of British Columbia, developing novel low-cost flexible sensor and actuator devices.

Ibrahim holds a PhD in Electrical Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a MS in Applied Physics from Stevens Institute of Technology, and undergraduate degrees in EE and Mathematics. He completed the Executive Development Program at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He is an IEEE fellow.
