Franciscan School of Theology at the University of San Diego

Designed for working professionals and recent undergraduates alike, this two-year academic program is offered by the Franciscan School of Theology in partnership with the University of San Diego. It is ideal for those pursuing careers in religious education, parish support, or ministry, as preparation for further academic work, or for those looking to incorporate a knowledge of faith into their existing profession.

The MTS degree program is based in the Franciscan Catholic tradition: a joy-filled faith study that promotes a heart of service, solidarity, and compassion, as well as using faith studies to enact positive change in communities from local to global.

Applications for admission are accepted on a rolling basis. A decision will be recommended by the Review Committee within one week of your application being submitted.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to regulations from the Department of Education, FST at USD is only accepting applications from residents in specific U.S. states and territories for enrollment into our 100% online degree programs. Please check our State Authorization Status List for the states and territories from which we can enroll residents in our 100% online degree programs. Programs are only considered to be 100% online degree programs if they have no physical presence (classes, fieldwork, or otherwise) in those states or territories.

Applicants are asked to address all three points. An acceptable statement of purpose should be between 500 – 700 words. When writing your response, please remember that this is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your writing skills and academic readiness.

Letter Of Recommendation Requirements

The Master of Theological Studies – Franciscan Theology (MTS – FT) degree involves academically rigorous coursework.

Once you have saved an electronic recommendation, an email request will automatically be sent to the recommender on your behalf. Please advise your recommender to look for this email in their inbox, as well as their spam or junk-mail folder, as emails do occasionally get filtered out.

Financial Aid

The first step in applying for aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Federal School Code for FST is G11792.

We recommend that applicants apply for financial aid when they apply for admission. Please notify the Admissions department as soon as possible if you will be applying for financial aid.

Recipients of financial aid will be notified of their award after their acceptance to FST.

Please note FST’s discounts are only available for On-campus programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to apply to the online MTS-FT program?

Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or the equivalent from a non-U.S. institution. A minimum GPA of 2.8 is recommended, though applicants with lower GPAs may still be considered if compensatory factors are present. The program welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, Catholic or otherwise, who are interested in deepening their understanding of theology and its application in their lives or work.

What do I need to include in my application?

A complete application includes an online form, $45 application fee (which may be waived by speaking with an advisor), a Statement of Purpose (500–700 words), official transcripts from all prior institutions, one or two letters of recommendation (at least one academic), and a resume or CV. International students must submit additional documents, including English proficiency scores and a financial declaration form.

Can I transfer credits into the MTS-FT program?

Yes. You may transfer up to six units of relevant graduate-level coursework from an accredited institution. All transfer credits are subject to review and approval by the academic director. Be sure to connect with an enrollment advisor early in the process if you’re considering transfer credit.

How many units is the MTS-FT?

The online MTS-FT program is a total of 36 units. Students enroll in two prescribed courses each semester for a total of six (6) semester units. During your final term, you will enroll in a single six-unit capstone course.

Is the online Master’s in Theological Studies program considered full-time or part-time?

The online Master’s in Theological Studies program provides six units per term, making it a part-time, or 3/4 time, program.

Does the MTS-FT program admit lay persons?

Yes. Most students in the Master of Theological Studies – Franciscan Theology program are laypersons and include educators, chaplains, healthcare providers, nonprofit leaders, military professionals, and career changers. The program is open to individuals from all walks of life who seek to deepen their theological understanding, whether for ministry, teaching, or personal formation. Do I have to be Catholic to attend FST?

No. While the Franciscan School of Theology is a Roman Catholic institution rooted in the Franciscan tradition, the online MTS-FT program welcomes students of all faiths (and those exploring faith for the first time) to engage in respectful dialogue and reflective theological study in a rigorous academic context.

Is there financial aid available for online MTS-FT students?

Yes. Financial aid is available through the Federal Direct Loan Program, open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. To apply, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Federal School Code for FST is G11792. Aid recipients will be notified of their award after acceptance to the program. Please note: FST discounts apply only to on-campus programs and are not available for the online MTS-FT.

Does the MTS-FT program admit international students?

Yes. The fully online format allows students around the world to engage with Franciscan theology and Catholic tradition from their home countries. Please note: U.S. federal financial aid is only available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

How much is my tuition?

The tuition for the online Master of Theological Studies – Franciscan Theology is $835 per unit, for a total of 36 units, or $30,060. This amount covers tuition only and does not include books, materials, or other fees. Tuition rates are subject to change.
