Many of us make resolutions to improve all areas of our lives in the new year. One thing many people forget about is protecting their personal information online.
Protecting your personal information is extremely important, so why not make it a New Year’s resolution to strengthen your identity and personal cyber security in 2019? Cyber security is a shared responsibility by everyone. Neither government authorities nor online businesses are responsible for your personal cybersecurity – in the end, it’s up to you.
Some tips:
- Change passwords in the New Year. Give your accounts some brand new locks to keep predators outside. Don’t use the same password across all accounts.
- Ensure that multi-factor authentication is turned on whenever possible (text a code)
- Beware of the “Internet of Things” devices.
- Check smart devices for audio and video recording capabilities and restrict purchasing with PINs.
- Check your back-ups and make sure to update the software on all of your devices.
- Get your credit report to ensure that there are no issues when you start the New Year and consider purchasing real-time credit monitoring services.
- Be careful of not making sales transaction on public WIFI and try to use credit cards instead of debit cards when making purchases online.
- Be careful when responding to emails and phone calls that ask for information such as SSN, bank account information, or other personal details.
