Dr. Jonathan Mack

Dr. Mack has over 35 years of health care experience as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner. Dr. Mack has held senior level hospital positions as Director of Emergency and Trauma Services, executive positions as a Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer for several Southern California Hospitals. Dr. Mack maintains an active practice as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner with a local medical group.

Dr. Mack earned an R.N. diploma in 1983 from Los Angeles County Medical Center, School of Nursing and an AA degree from Los Angeles City College. Dr. Mack completed an MSN in Nursing with a certificate as a nurse practitioner from Simmons College, Boston, MA., in 1994. Dr. Mack continued his graduate education and completed his PhD in Nursing at the University of San Diego, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science. His dissertation examined the application of systems engineering and technology to predict bed utilization.

Dr. Mack completed a post-doctoral engineering fellowship with the West Wireless Health Institute. His post-doctoral research focused on medical device development and user interface design,. During his fellowship Dr. Mack participated in the development of smart phone base technology to conduct wireless fetal monitoring and non-stress testing of high risk pregnancies. After completing his Fellowship, he continued to build upon his technology and informatics expertise, as Director of Research and Development.

Dr. Mack joined the faculty of the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, in 2008 and has taught across pre-license masters degree and nurse practitioner programs. Dr. Mack is currently Program Director for the Graduate Health Care and Nursing Informatics programs. He provided leadership for the development and implementation of both programs in 2009, and implemented online sections in 2014 . Dr Mack’s program of research includes telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, and simulation based learning for health care and nursing informatics.

The Role of the Program Coordinator

The program coordinator and students will have many interactions while enrolled. They will be communicating important dates, deadlines and details to students in order to insure they have all the information needed to successfully engage in the program.

Program Coordinators are here to respond to questions and concerns, and to help develop solutions for success in this program. In the event that they don’t know the answer to a question, they can still put students in touch with the right office or person. They will be the first point of contact throughout a students time at USD, so it is encouraged to keep their email and phone number handy.
