Jud Simonds was appointed Director of Nursing Informatics at the University of California, San Diego Health in 2019. He is responsible for the Acute and Ambulatory Informatics teams, which includes EHR training. Prior to that, he worked with Providence St. Joseph Health in Seattle, WA as the Executive Director, Clinical Informatics.
Jud has a background in critical care nursing, which began at the University of Minnesota, and eventually brought him to San Diego, where he spent seven years at Scripps Health both as a staff nurse and Patient Care Manager of the CCU. He also spent time in the healthcare information technology vendor space, leading clinical implementation teams at both Clinicomp International and Patientsafe solutions.
He has been teaching online and designing curriculum on nursing leadership and clinical informatics since 2011.
Jud holds a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership from California State University, Dominguez Hills and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also has certifications in both Nursing Informatics and as a Nurse Executive from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Jud has a passion for health information technology, including patient engagement technologies such as digital innovation to improve health outcomes. His DNP project will focus on the implementation of a patient engagement technology within a med/surg nursing unit in which he hopes to measure trends regarding patient experience data and overall retention of essential patient education at time of discharge.
